BIRATNAGAR, May 9: Hikmat Kumar Karki, the leader of CPN-UML Koshi Province Parliamentary Party, has been appointed as the chief minister (CM) of Koshi Province.

UML leader Karki submitted his claim to the post of chief minister this morning after the Province Chief Parshuram Khapung called for the formation of a new government according to Clause 5 of Article 168 of the Constitution.
Soon after, the signatures of the MPs who had supported him were verified. Then Province Chief Khapung announced that Karki had been appointed as the chief minister. Outgoing CM Kedar Karki has approached the Supreme Court against the call for new government formation.
In the 93-member Koshi Province Assembly, 47 votes are required for a majority. After 52 votes were cast in favor of CM Karki, Province Chief Khapung announced that Karki had been appointed as the new CM.
