KATHMANDU, May 13: Led by the party’s senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, a dissident faction of lawmakers of the ruling CPN-UML has given an ultimatum to the party leadership to address their demands by 4:30 PM Thursday.

Amid widespread rumors that the lawmakers close to the Nepal faction are preparing to resign en masse ahead of Thursday 9 PM’s deadline to stake claim for new government formation, the party leadership has been asked to withdraw all the decisions taken on March 12 and resurrect the party mechanisms as they were before May 16, 2018.

It is to be noted that the CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) had merged and formed the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) on May 17, 2018 after their successful election drive in 2017. The NCP, however, was scrapped by the March 7 Supreme Court order.

A Central Working Committee of the party’s Oli faction on March 12 earlier this year had taken a number of important - some of them controversial - decisions that include giving new responsibilities to leaders belonging to the erstwhile CPN (Maoist Center), withdrawing the responsibilities given earlier to the leaders close to senior leader Nepal, holding the party’s general convention from November 18 to November 22 and amending the party’s statute.
