UNDP, DfID to help local units implement climate projects

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: The government, UNDP and the UK's Department for International Development in Nepal (DfID) have signed an agreement to support climate-vulnerable rural municipalities in three provinces -- Province 5, Karnali province and Province 7 -- to design and implement climate resilient development initiatives.

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: The government, UNDP and the UK's Department for International Development in Nepal (DfID) have signed an agreement to support climate-vulnerable rural municipalities in three provinces -- Province 5, Karnali province and Province 7 -- to design and implement climate resilient development initiatives.


According to a press statement issued by the UNDP Nepal on Friday, the UK will support the UNDP to implement the Nepal Climate Change Support Programme (NCCSP) in 14 select rural municipalities of the provinces. A total of Rs 300 million will be implemented over the next one year.

“The project will embed climate resilience into development plans and implement close to 100 locally-identified climate- resilient development projects related to drinking water, irrigation, slope stabilization and water conservation,” said the UNDP statement.


A joint project of the UNDP and the Ministry of Forest and Environment, NCCSP has been supporting Nepal's climate-vulnerable districts to identify and execute climate- resilient development projects for over five years.


Joint Secretary at the MoFE Dr Maheshwar Dhakal and Country Director of UNDP Nepal Renaud Meyer signed the project document in the presence of Secretary of Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE) Dr Bishwa Nath Oli. A cost sharing agreement was signed between Dr Rurik Marsden, DfID head of office and UNDP Country Director Meyer.
