Usha Rai death case: Three remanded into custody, one granted bail

DHARAN, Dec 29: The District Court, Sunsari, has ordered three accused in the Usha Rai case be sent to jail for preliminary investigation and one of the accused be released after paying a bail of Rs 100,000.

DHARAN, Dec 29: The District Court, Sunsari, has ordered three accused in the Usha Rai case be sent to jail for preliminary investigation and one of the accused be released after paying a bail of Rs 100,000.


The bench of Judge Punya Prasad Sapkota gave this order in the death case of Usha Rai. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)  Buddha Shrestha of the Area  Police Office, Dharan , said  that the court has ordered the main accused of the incident, Urmila Rai, Suseli Rai and Sumitra Rai of Dharan-13 to be sent to jail for preliminary investigation.

According to him, the court has ordered the accused Ratna Subba to be released on a bail of Rs 100,000. The three accused will be sent to Jhumka Jail after their Covid-19 test reports arrive.


On October 20, a group of women led by Urmila Rai attacked and beat up Usha on the charge of “seducing” her husband. Usha lived with her two daughters. Her husband died about two years ago. She was making a living by sewing clothes. Initially, she lived in the main accused Urmila's house. Only about five months ago she moved to Dharan-13 Surya Marga. 


Three more accused in this incident are absconding. Among those absconding are Nirkumari Gurung, Srijana Rai and Meena Rai. “We are searching for the accused who are absconding, " DSP Shrestha said.
