KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The movie Jatra that revolves around drama created by money is worth watching. The story focuses on poverty that leads the protagonists to make bad choices. The social stigmas that the movie highlights are somehow still prevalent in our society. The self created status by the society in terms of economic inequality compels the characters to cross their ethical boundaries in order to live up to the societal
expectations.
Directed and written by Pradeep Bhattarai, the movie features artists like Bipin Karki, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Rabindra Jha and Barsha Raut. Audience will also see Prechya Bajracharya as a simple indisposed girl who donated her kidney to save someone else’s life.
The story begins with the discovery of a bag full of money by one of the main characters played by Bipin Karki who is a stationery seller with low income. The movie takes a turn when he shares this secret with his trusted friends portrayed by Rabindra Singh Baniya and Rabindra Jha. The trio not only struggle to keep this secret but also go through various phases of internal conflict leading them to make silly decisions which leads to
comical moments.
This comedy movie takes a somewhat sarcastic approach toward the stereotypical thinking of people who are influenced by wealth and power. The movie also has some emotional scenes that create quite an impact and impart some valuable lessons. (Spoiler alert) The twist at the end of the movie is unexpected and leaves room for a sequel.
Perhaps, the best thing about the movie is that it doesn’t feel unnecessarily long. There is a certain relatable charm to it as it depicts the struggles people face on a day-to-day basis. All in all, I’d say Jatra is certainly a complete entertainment package with just the right blend of reflection on issues and comedy.
