SINDHUPALCHOWK, Jan 24: The United States Youth Council (USYC) 2015, iMentor team organized the ‘First Education Career Fair 2017’ as part of their Community Engagement Project (CEP) on January 21 at Shree Ramdevi Secondary School in Sindhupalchowk.

The program wanted to help with career counselling to students of Sindhupalchowk district and to give them an idea about various opportunities after SLC examination.

Around 300 hundred students from six different schools participated in the fair.

Students were provided information about education, national security and civil service and administration, health, humanities-arts, media-entertainment-sports, engineering-information technology, tourism and hospitality, and management- social entrepreneurship.

“When I was working as a Teach for Nepal’s fellow at Simle village of Lalitpur, I realized that students needed proper exposure. Many wanted to become doctors and engineers but didn’t have proper explanation as to why they wanted to pursue career in that field.

They didn’t have information about different sectors and opportunities. This project was designed to give them information about areas before they decide their career by bringing in professionals from various sectors,” said Nawang Sherpa, the team leader of the iMentor project.

Keshab Lal Shrestha, the principal of Shree Ramdevi Secondary School, expressed his happiness and hoped that programs like these will help students to pursue career in the field of their choice.

The students were mentored by university graduates and young professionals where Teach for Nepal’s fellows acted as mediators. Students not only talked about opportunities but also difficulties that come with following career in a specific field.

Students in the fair could choose to attend counseling for three different fields according to their priority.

Raju Khanal, one of the mentors, said, “This fair took me back to my school days and I got the opportunity to share my experience with future leaders. Students here were unaware about the process of following certain career path but I am happy that they got this opportunity to learn about how they can further develop their career. I look forward to guide them.”

Nirjala Khadka, a participant at the fair said that this program gave her the opportunity to explore the field of her choice. “I wanted to pursue hospitality and management but didn’t know how. I didn’t know what I could become studying this subject except for working in a hotel. I am glad I could participate in this fair.”

The USYC 2015 will soon be publishing a booklet to help the students take reference and help guide in their aspirations for further studies.
