Woman held with 770 gram gold from TIA

KATHMANDU, August 27: Police on Friday arrested a woman on charge of smuggling 770 grams of gold from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

KATHMANDU, August 27: Police on Friday arrested a woman on charge of smuggling 770 grams of gold from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).


Kabita Shrestha, a 56 year old lady and a permanent resident of Sukuldhoka of Bhaktapur Municipality-8, was found hiding the aforementioned amount of gold to evade the customs tax. She hid the precious metal in a diaper under her slacks.

Through the budget 2022/23, the government has allowed individuals to import only up to 100 grams of raw gold (gold biscuits). While importing raw gold, individuals need to pay duty of Rs 9,500 per 10 gram if the imported quantity is up to 50 gram. For the next 50 gram, the import tax will be slapped at the rate of Rs 10,500 per 10 gram.
