Women's participation in state organs in Nepal encouraging: Deputy Speaker

BANIYANI, March 2: House of Representatives' Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar has said women's participation in the state organs in Nepal is encouraging.


Addressing a program organized here today by the Birtamod-based Birata Lady Jaycees today, the deputy speaker said that women's participation in state bodies was more encouraging than in even the big and developed nations.

"The representation of women in most developed countries is five to 25 percent. In Nepal, the Constitution has guaranteed 33 percent women’s participation in state bodies and this must be increased to 50 percent."


She said there is still a long way to go to improve the women's rights situation and achieve gender equality. Underlining the need for promoting the participation of women in every sector, she underlined the need for switching to actions against anomalies. 


Sexuality, disability and geography should also be the guidelines for women's participation in the state bodies, according to the deputy speaker, who assesses  women's presence in politics as 'rubber stamps'. 


On the occasion, pilot Jina Ligden was honored with the 'Outstanding Woman Honor' for this year towards the technical genre, according to Jaycees Chair Sangita Giri. The organization has been honoring one woman from Jhapa with special contribution to society each year on the occasion of Women's Day since 2021.
