Nepal's first oil spill of 12k liters puts police on high alert in Udayapur

In Nepal’s first oil spill accident, police of Udayapur at Ghurmi are in high alert of possible fire.

KATHMANDU, Mar 28: In Nepal’s first oil spill accident, police of Udayapur at Ghurmi are in high alert of possible fire. 


An oil tanker, Na 6 Kha 3231 carrying 12,000 liter of diesel met in an accident spilling all of its stored fuel in a gorge at Ghurmi after the driver ‘supposedly’ fell asleep, according to District Police Office, Udayapur’s chief Nawaraj Bhatta said. Two people were killed and three others sustained injuries in the accident that happened at 2 AM today.

“This is the first time that I’ve come to know of an oil spill,” Bhatta said. He added that the police was educating residents to take precautionary measures to avoid any activities that could trigger unforeseen incidents, including, fire and more casualties.   “It’s lucky: the spill happened far away from residence.”


“This is the only case of oil spill we’ve recorded. This is country’s first oil spill,” Umesh Ranjitkar, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Traffic Police, Kathmandu said.   


Those deceased are the truck’s driver, Purna Prasad Khanal, 23 of Amlekhgunj-4, Bara and Saroj Moktan, 31 of Namatar, Makwanpur. Those injured are Subash Tamang, 24 from Bhaktapur, Abhisekh Shrestha, 17 from Nijgadh, Bara and Sujan Gole, 25 of Charikot, Dolakha, Bhatta, said. Those injured have been brought to Kathmandu for further treatment.
