Over 1,200 tourists repatriated so far
KATHMANDU, April 1: A total of 302 US tourists flew out of Nepal in a chartered flight on Tuesday.
According to Ramesh Kumar KC, director general at the Department of immigration, altogether 302 US nationals – 293 adults and 9 infants – were on board the chartered flight of Qatar Airways.
Almost 5,000 tourists still stranded in Nepal
With this, more than 1,200 foreign tourists stranded in Nepal have been repatriated to their respective countries.
Four chartered flights were used to repatriate tourists out of Nepal. The government has been facilitating diplomatic missions to repatriate their citizens by operating chartered flights even during the lockdown. The first chartered flight operated on Friday carried 304 tourists out of Nepal. Similarly, two chartered flights operated on Saturday had 304 tourists each.
The Australian Embassy in Kathmandu is operating another chartered flight on Wednesday to repatriate Australian tourists from Nepal.
The government granted permission to operate chartered flights on the request of embassies of Germany, the US, France and Australia. Korean Air is also operating chartered flight from Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday.
Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) had rescued tourists stranded in Everest and the Annapurna Region from Lukla and Pokhara, respectively, after the government imposed nationwide lockdown and shut all its airports.
All international flights to and from Tribhuvan International Airport also remain suspended due to lockdown.
