444 killed, 101 others missing in natural disasters since April this year

KATHMANDU, Oct 19: A total of 444 persons lost their lives due to various natural disasters since April this year, according to the Natural Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

KATHMANDU, Oct 18: A total of 444 persons lost their lives due to various natural disasters since April this year, according to the Natural Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).


Altogether 101 persons have gone missing in such incidents, while 739 others were injured in the incidents of floods, landslides and lightning triggered mostly by monsoon rainfall. 


NDRRMA’s CEO Anil Pokharel shared that landslides incurred the biggest loss of lives of people and livestock, and properties this year. He said that 295 people died in the incidents of landslides that occurred in various places across the country. 


A total of 1,755 livestock were reported dead in the disasters, while damages of properties caused due to natural disasters is estimated to be around Rs 820 million.

Similarly, 295 people died, 64 people went missing and 223 others were injured due to landslides. A total of 435 animals were killed in the landslides. It is estimated that around Rs 50.9 million worth of properties were damaged due to the landslide. 


A report made public by the NDRRMA said the lightning claimed 65 lives during this period, leaving 213 persons and 696 livestock injured. The lightning incidents caused damage worth about Rs 5.9 million.


Likewise, the flood caused the death of 42 people while  37 others went missing. A total of 11 persons were injured in the incidents of floods, according to the Authority. As many as 272 animals were reported to have died in the floods that caused loss worth around Rs 50 million.


Also, 10 people were killed and 144 others were injured in the incidents of fire. Properties worth over Rs 600 million were damaged in the incidents. 


A total of 21 people died of snakebites, while  36 others were left injured. Additionally, 11 other people were killed and 112 others were left injured by various wild animals.
