KATHMANDU, Oct 6: Laying down of water supply pipes remains on total 55 out of the total 670 kilometers under the Melamchi Water Supply Project.

The Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) is responsible for laying down the water supply pipeline for the project. The government's goal was to distribute water from the Melamchi project by the middle of this month.

The project directorate had halted the work of laying down the water supply pipes on the main roads in the Kathmandu Valley for some time as the roads became muddy during the monsoon and the work of digging the tunnel for the project was also not completed.

Directorate spokesman Lila Prasad Dhakal said the work on installing the water supply lines has been resumed with the end of the rainy season.

"Sixty kilometres of the main water supply pipeline has been installed and this task is almost completed except the work related to fixing the pipe-joints. The remaining works of laying down pipeline on 55 kilometres is planned to complete by January 14, 2018," he said.

The trial run has also been carried out for the places where the water supply main pipeline has been installed.

It is said only 2.5 kilometres of the tunnel digging works remain out of the total 27 kilomters long tunnel of the project. Water from the Melamchi river in Sindhupalchowk district would be pumped to Kathmandu under the project. The project has the objective of supplying the Melamchi water to the Valley denizens by April 13, 2018. RSS
