Ageing Nepal bags UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2020

KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Krishna Gopal Shrestha today handed over the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2020 to Ageing Nepal.

KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Krishna Gopal Shrestha today handed over the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2020 to Ageing Nepal.


Ageing Nepal is an organisation working in the field of adult literacy, especially the senior citizens.  


Minister Shrestha handed over the medal of the Prize to Krishna Murari Gautam (Chatyang Master), President of Ageing Nepal, amidst a program at the ministry here today.

The prize carries a purse of 20 thousand US Dollars (approximately Rs 2.33 million).


Head of UNESCO, Kathmandu, Christine Manhart presented the Award certificate on the occasion. 


On the occasion, the education minister said that Nepal's name has been further highlighted throughout the world after the organisation won the prize. He said a program would be formulated for the education of the senior citizens in a new way with inputs from the experts.


Ministry Secretary Gopinath Mainali said it is a matter of pride for the nation to win this prize through competition among 76 competing organisations from around the world.


President of Ageing Nepal, Gautam urged the government to adopt a policy for providing literacy to the senior citizens enabling them to use modern information technology as well.


Deputy Secretary General of Nepal National Commission for UNESCO, Dr Babu Ram Adhikari said the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris had announced the prize through a virtual programme on the occasion of the International Literacy Day and has already remitted the prize amount.
