Air pollution sees a rise across Nepal

KATHMANDU May 12: Air pollution in Nepal is starting to worsen again with the increased fire incidents and lack of rain. According to the latest data, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Patan, Lalitpur is 176, Kirtipur, Kathmandu 163, Narayani 171 and Dhankuta 155.

KATHMANDU May 12: Air pollution in Nepal is starting to worsen again with the increased fire incidents and lack of rain. According to the latest data, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Patan, Lalitpur is 176, Kirtipur, Kathmandu 163, Narayani 171 and Dhankuta 155. 


An AQI within the range of 0 to 50 is considered normal. Any AQI above 150 is considered unhealthy. Patan, Dhankuta, Ratnapark, Kirtipur and Narayani all have AQIs above 150. Experts advise wearing masks outside houses when air pollution reaches this level. 


Meteorologist Govinda Jha shared that Kathmandu Valley, along with many other places, has been experiencing haze in the mornings due to air pollution. According to him, there is no likelihood of heavy rainfall, and the pollution is expected to increase further.

The air quality in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur, and Birendranagar is at risk and is said to be unhealthy. At the moment, the AQI in these areas is below 150. 


Experts say this weather can cause chronic illness and that it is risky for children and the elderly. Exhaust gasses from vehicles are also a major contributor to the issue of air pollution.
