KATHMANDU, Dec 11: All seven political parties that have secured seats in the House of Representatives (HoR) under the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system have submitted the final list of their candidates to the Election Commission on Saturday.

There is a provision to elect 110 members under the PR electoral system and 165 members under the First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system in the House of Representatives (HoR). A political party must receive at least three percent of the total valid votes in the PR electoral system to secure their PR seats.

According to the Election Commission (EC), only seven political parties, namely the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janata Samajbadi Party and Janamat Party had crossed the three percent threshold to secure their PR seats.

These seven parties on Saturday submitted the final list of candidates, whose names are already submitted in the closed list to the EC, for their election as HoR members under the PR electoral system. The EC will now verify the names submitted by the parties and officially announce their election on Monday, according to Joint Secretary Yagya Prasad Bhattarai at the EC.

In the recently-held election, the UML had secured 34 seats, NC 32 seats, Maoist Center 24 seats, Rastriya Swatantra Party 13 seats and RPP 7 seats under the PR electoral system. Similarly, Janata Samajbadi Party and Janamat Party have each won 5 seats under the PR electoral system.

Joint Secretary Bhattarai said the EC will send the final list of HoR members elected both under the FPTP and PR electoral systems to President Bhandari to pave the way for the formation of a new government. As per the existing laws, the EC has to submit a final list of the HoR candidates elected within seven days of the publication of the final results to the president.
