KATHMANDU, Feb 1: Lucky Sherpa has stepped down as the Ambassador to Australia stating that it was against her ethics to continue serving as the ambassador amid allegations of human trafficking. Sherpa resigned from her position following direction from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and co-chairperson of Nepal Communist Party, Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
Amid controversy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had formed a three-member panel to investigate the allegations. The panel had recommended to relieve her from her duties.
Envoy Sherpa resigns
Ambassador Sherpa’s former driver Wongchhu Sherpa has accused the ambassador and her husband of human trafficking, saying he had collected money for them from some people promising them safe passage to Australia.
Issuing a press statement, she said that the allegations were defamatory and it was through a press release that she could clarify on the allegations. She also accused the media of providing biased stories and affecting the country's diplomat who works night and day "for the benefits of the country."
Sherpa said that she and her husband were made victims of an organized crime that eventually affected her career before it ever begun. "The start of my career has been associated with human trafficking," she said.
