KATHMANDU, April 2: Mayor Balendra Shah met with Urban Development Minister Dhan Bahadur Budha to discuss waste management in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and cooperation regarding the Bancharedanda landfill site in Nuwakot.
In the meeting held at the ministry in Singha Durbar, the two discussed working on a long-term plan for waste management in the valley.
Mayor Shah expressed readiness to cooperate in waste management efforts stating that the KMC is initiating a 'zero waste' program in some wards and requires support from the ministry for its success. In the meeting, Mayor Shah said that the KMC will provide necessary cooperation and facilitation to manage the waste by further improving the structure built for waste management at the landfill site in Bancharedanda.

Minister Budha stated that he has instructed his subordinate agencies to reduce the amount of waste disposal in Bancharedanda and mentioned that the ministry wants to coordinate and cooperate with KMC and Lalitpur Metropolitan City for a long-term solution to waste management. Minister Budha also asked Mayor Shah for suggestions on how to make the work being done within the KMC effective and speed up development.
In response, Mayor Shah requested to proceed with the necessary coordination to manage traffic jams in Kathmandu Valley and remove unorganized settlements on the river banks of the valley.
Minister Budha expressed interest in exploring the potential of ‘Podway’ to reduce traffic congestion and Mayor Shah suggested conducting a feasibility study of Podway.
In the discussion, Mayor Shah proposed constructing flyovers or underpasses in congested areas like Baneshwar and Lainchaur to ease traffic congestion in Kathmandu Valley, providing relief to the residents of the capital.
