Cabinet decides to move forward statute amendment

KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Despite of wide speculation that the government would announce dates for local election from the cabinet meeting, the government instead decided to move forward the constitution amendment bill tabled in the parliament and extended the deadline of the taskforce formed to study the report of the commission for local restructuring.

KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Despite of wide speculation that the government would announce dates for local election from the cabinet meeting, the government instead decided to move forward the constitution amendment bill tabled in the parliament and extended the deadline of the taskforce formed to study the report of the commission for local restructuring.


According to Minister for Information and Communication Surendra Karki, the cabinet meeting on Monday decided to move forward the amendment bill as per the demands of Madhes-based parties. Likewise, the cabinet has decided to work further to establish Federal Commission to address the demands of agitating ethnic groups and communities.

Meanwhile, the cabinet asked the taskforce formed under the leadership of Minister for Local Development Hitaraj Pandey to complete its study by next week and recommend the cabinet on what can be done to the report submitted by the commission for local restructuring.


However, sources say that the cabinet could meet again today.
