KATHMANDU, May 24: In the first 10 months of the current fiscal year (FY) 2023/24, the Chobhar Dry Port in Kathmandu recorded imports totaling Rs 830 million. Despite this substantial import activity, the port has reported zero exports.
Data from the Department of Customs reveals that from mid-July to mid-May, goods valued at Rs 836.56 million entered the Chobhar Dry Port which means that 0.06 percent of the country’s total imports have been imported from this port. In total, goods worth Rs 1.33 trillion have been imported in the current fiscal year while goods worth Rs 126 billion have been exported.
Groundwater for food security
Nepal conducts international trade through 29 customs points and dry ports. The Birgunj Customs Office remains the major hub, handling Rs 447.34 billion in imports, which accounts for 34.32 percent of the nation's total imports. Exports through Birgunj have reached Rs 25.47 billion, making up 20.19 percent of the total exports.
