KATHMANDU, Sep 17: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has summoned leaders and other members of the ruling CPN (Maoist Center) to investigate into the alleged irregularities at Maoist cantonments.

CIAA spokesman Ganesh Raj Karki, in a hurriedly-organized press meet on Friday evening, said that they decided to summon all concerned regarding irregularities at the Maoist cantonments, which were dissolved around four years ago. According to Karki, those summoned will have to appear before the CIAA within 30 days starting Friday.

“We found that there is a mismatch between the amount of money released from the state coffers for distribution among combatants staying at various cantonments and the number of combatants who received the money,” said Karki during the press meet. “We will interrogate any person or leader irrespective of his/her present position and investigate into the irregularities.”

He claimed that the CIAA has secured some important documents in connection with the irregularities in the cantonments.

It is estimated that the government spent over Rs 15 billion for thousands of combatants and for the upkeep of the cantonments.

The CIAA has asked the concerned ones to appear at the anti-corruption body and record their statements.

The spokesperson claimed that important office bearers of the Maoist party have been found involved in the irregularities. He, however, declined to disclose the names.

He also claimed that the CIAA has brought several other individuals involved in the decision-making process in various fields ranging from economic, political and social sectors.

The CIAA announcement came within hours of the Supreme Court deciding to review its previous verdict with regard to the questions raised on the appointment of Lokman Singh Karki as CIAA chief commissioner.
