KATHMANDU, June 28: A new contract has been awarded for the construction of the Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium in Bharatpur, Chitwan.

The construction of the stadium, located in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-15, Rampur, remains halted for about three years. Originally initiated by the Dhurmus Suntali Foundation, the construction was halted midway, leading to the transfer of ownership to Bharatpur Metropolitan City.

Subsequently, with 70 percent funding from the Bagmati Province Government and 30 percent from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, it was decided to revive the stalled stadium.

Bharatpur Metropolitan City, which has allocated a budget of Rs 43 million for the project, has now awarded the construction contract. In a public notice, it announced that Himalayan-Kalinchok-BBI JV has been entrusted with the construction, costing Rs 682.64 million.

The tender process commenced in the third week of February, originally estimated at Rs 1.1 billion for the first phase. However, the awarded bid represents a 38 percent reduction in costs.

The first phase includes construction of a stand accommodating 10,000 spectators, field infrastructure, and two tower buildings with pavilions. Upon completion, the stadium's capacity will expand to accommodate up to 15,000 spectators.

The construction timeline stipulates completion within two and a half years for the first phase, followed by the commencement of the second phase.

This initiative aims to bolster sports infrastructure in Chitwan and promote cricket development in Nepal.
