KATHMANDU, May 27: A protest led by activists against the government amid the prohibitory order took place in Kirtipur on Wednesday. The group of activists staged the protest at Kirtipur against the government in memory of Surya Bahadur Tamang, who died of starvation during the first wave of the pandemic last year.
The activists protested against the dissolution of parliament and announcement of elections by the government and their disregard to public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the occasion, folk singer Anjan Babu gave a presentation as well.

During the demonstration, activists like writer and journalist Narayan Wagle and writer Yug Pathak who were present in the protest urged the government to focus on the control and prevention of COVID-19 rather than on elections at the moment. The activists carried various placards and banners with phrases, targeted against the government like “Free Health Care, Nationalization of Hospitals,” “Corpses on top of corpses are piling up, and you are asking for votes,” “Oxygen and vaccines are needed, not ballot papers,” and “We need vaccine.”
There have been widespread protests in parts of Kathmandu valley following the dissolution of parliament and announcement of elections for the second time by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
