Impeachment sought against justices issuing the verdict

KATHMANDU, July 24: A mass demonstration was held in the capital on Friday demanding impeachment against the Supreme Court (SC) justices freeing murder-convict former Armed Police Force (APF) DIG Ranjan Koirala

Hareram Dhakal, who is the father of slain Geeta Dhakal, was among those taking part in the demonstration.

A large number of people from different walks of life joined the protest to express their dissatisfaction against the verdict made by the apex court on June 29 to free Koirala, who was serving a jail term on the charge of brutally murdering his own wife Geeta Dhakal.

Koirala was released from the Dillibazar jail on Thursday following the controversial verdict by a joint bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and Justice Tej Bahadur KC. The verdict reduced the jail-term of Koirala to eight years and six months, waving 11 years of jail term slapped by the Kathmandu District Court and Patan High Court.

The agitating protestors gathered at Maitighar Mandala on Friday afternoon carried placards demanding impeachment against justices for issuing the controversial verdict. They also chanted strong slogans against justices and Nepal’s judicial system.

Earlier, Kathmandu District Court and the High Court had issued a verdict slapping life-imprisonment on Koirala confiscating all his property. Koirala had confessed that he had killed his wife Geeta Dhakal by strangling her in January 2012. Koirala had murdered his wife, took her dead body to Palung and burned it to destroy the evidence of his killing her.

Amid mounting pressure from the public, the government on Thursday filed a review petition at the Supreme Court, challenging the verdict.
