KATHMANDU, SEPT 13: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that Nepali Congress (NC) will take the lead in amending the constitution if voted to power in the upcoming elections.

Addressing a poll campaign in the district headquarters Rajbiraj on Tuesday, Prime Minister Deuba told voters that the government was preparing to put the amendment bill to vote in parliament after the local elections. The parliament had rejected the bill in August.

"We failed to push the bill through the parliament but NC has not abandoned the issue. The bill will once again be put to vote in parliament after the local elections. NC is committed to fulfilling the demands of the Madhesi communities," Deuba told voters while making his pitch for the party. He claimed that NC was the only party that has consistently adhered to the principles of democracy and inclusion and supported the cause of marginalized and excluded communities.

Prime Minister Deuba also made strong pitch for social, economic and cultural development of the province if elected to power.

Prime Minister Deuba also announced to explore long-term solution of flood problems in the region. He said that the construction of the Koshi high dam and diversion in Sunkoshi River was top priority of the government at the moment.

Floods this year killed more than 150 people, mostly in Madhes and displaced millions.

"There is a need for a permanent solution to the flood problem as it causes huge losses in the districts of Madhes. The government is serious about it," Deuba said, adding that his government was in constant touch with India to address the problem.
