KATHMANDU, April 23: Devi Khadka, born in Dolakha, displayed an early passion for learning, despite societal norms that limited girls' education in her village. While her brothers attended school, Khadka, like many other girls, took on responsibilities as a farmer and a shepherd. However, her thirst for knowledge led her to secretly learn the alphabets from her brothers' books.
At a young age, Khadka read the book 'Nari, Bandhan, and Mukti', which sparked her interest in politics and social change. Driven by a quest for liberation described in the books, she entered politics.
During the armed conflict, Khadka was arrested by security forces and subjected to torture and rape. Despite the traumatic experience, she was eventually released with the help of human rights activists. However, the ordeal left her battling depression and anxiety.

At her lowest point, Khadka contemplated ending her life but instead channeled her pain into activism, becoming more involved in the Maoist movement. With the success of the 2006/2007 movement, there was hope that the dream of women's liberation would be realized. However, the journey towards justice and equality was far from over.
Khadka recognized the plight of rape victims from the conflict, many of whom suffered in silence due to stigma and neglect. For the past five years, she has been tirelessly working to support these survivors, building a network across the country to address their mental and physical health needs.
She believes that while many conflict-related issues were discussed, the specific issue of rape remained overlooked. Khadka’s relentless advocacy has yielded significant progress in her campaign to seek justice for conflict-era rape victims. Through her collaboration with the parliamentary committee, she has devised a solution to directly list cases with the Supreme Court, bypassing the lengthy legal procedures.
This innovative approach will facilitate the identification of men and women who were victims of rape during the conflict, paving the way for their rightful compensation and rehabilitation.
Despite facing threats, intimidation, and opposition from various quarters, Devi's determination remained unshaken. She persevered, overcoming obstacles and making significant strides in her mission.
Her selfless work has earned her the respect and admiration of many, making her a true Citizen Hero.
