Doctors remove spoon stuck in abdomen without performing surgery

KATHMANDU, June 27: A team of doctors at the Norvic Hospital in Thapathali have removed a spoon stuck in the stomach of a 17-year-old without surgery.

KATHMANDU, June 27: A team of doctors at the Norvic Hospital in Thapathali have removed a spoon stuck in the stomach of a 17-year-old without surgery. 


The team led by Digestive Specialist of Norvic Hospital and Head of Digestive Disease Center Dr Sandeep Raj Kunwar performed endoscopy and managed to remove the spoon from the stomach without performing a surgery.

A 17-year-old girl from Kathmandu had swallowed the spoon by mistake. Swallowing a spoon and getting stuck in the stomach is a complex phenomenon. In such cases, surgery is considered necessary.


Dr Kunwar claimed that this was probably the first case in Nepal where a spoon was safely removed from the stomach without surgery. The team led by Dr Kunwar has been extracting coins, pins and bones, accidentally swallowed by children without any surgery.


The patient, who is also mentally ill, said that she accidentally swallowed the spoon while drinking water. The spoon stuck in the stomach was removed within 45 minutes without surgery.
