KATHMANDU, Nov 27: Crusador of medical education reforms, Dr Govinda KC, has urged the government to stall the process of converting the Koshi Zonal Hospital into a teaching hospital under the Purbanchal University (PU) until the formation of the Medical Education Commission.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) on November 14 decided to allow PU to convert Biratnagar-based Koshi Zonal Hospital into PU's teaching hospital in Province 1.

Issuing a press statement on Sunday, Dr KC said that the government should not move ahead with the process to set up another medical college in Biratnagar as there already are two private medical colleges. "The government should wait until the formation of the Medical Education Commission as per the Medical Education Ordinance," said Dr KC. "New medical college should be established in the region where no medical colleges have been set up yet," he added.
Dr KC further said that the government's focus should be on setting up a Medical Education Commission as soon as new parliament comes into existence. "We have already urged the Ministry of Health to stall the procedure of setting up new medical college until the new parliament approves the ordinance," he added.
Meanwhile, Dr KC expressed his gratitude to the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) for its decision not to allow Kathmandu University to add MBBS seats at the Biratnagar-based Birat Medical College and Nobel Medical College. "NMC's right decision has discouraged the medical mafia," Dr KC said in his statement.
