KATHMANDU, July 5: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday unveiled the calendar of events for the upcoming midterm polls for the lower house of federal parliament.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari on May 22 announced the mid-term poll for the House of Representatives (HoR) for November 12 and 19 after dissolving parliament at the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.
According to the calendar of events unveiled by the poll body, political parties will be asked to get registered at the commission between July 15 and 30.
EC passes electoral calendar for November 20 polls
Applications for the political party registration for the purpose of the elections will be approved on July 31 and published in Nepal Gazette on August 7.
Election programs for the proportional electoral system will be published on August 4. As per the constitutional provision, the 275-member House of Representatives (HoR) includes 165 members elected through the first-past-the-post electoral system and 110 others via proportional electoral system.
The election body shared that it would make the electoral roll public on September 8, on which day the polling centers will also be designated.
Candidacy nominations for the first phase of election to be held on November 12, will take place on October 6 and 7. Nomination of candidates for the second phase of election will take place on October 16 and 17.
The poll body unveiled the schedule at a time when the House dissolution case is being heard at the constitutional bench in the Supreme Court. The court is expected to pass a verdict over the case in a few days as plaintiffs and defendants concluded their pleading. The amicus curiae session is underway at the bench on Monday.
