KATHMANDU, Sept 2: The election of the Chairpersons of the Thematic Committee under the National Assembly will be held on September 8.

The date of the election to pick heads of all thematic committees of the upper house of federal parliament was decided as per the agreement reached among the parties in the National Assembly, according to the Secretariat of the National Assembly.

The term of the chairpersons of the thematic committees expired on March 5, 2022. A new member was elected to the vacant National Assembly member post on January 26, 2022.

In the 59-member National Assembly, one-third of the members are elected every two years. In the rules of the National Assembly, there is a provision to reconstitute the thematic committees and election of the new heads of those committees.

This led to the criticisms that the heads of the thematic committees were not elected on time. Now, the parties have agreed to hold the election of the chairman on September 8.

The National Assembly has a Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee, Legislative Management Committee, Delegated Management and Government Assurance Committee and National Concerns and Coordination Committee.
