KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Deputy Speaker Shivamaya Tumbahamphe has urged the female lawmakers to play an active role in the House of Representatives for women empowerment on Tuesday.

Tumbahamphe made the statement during an interaction program on parliamentary practice. She argued that the role of female lawmakers in the legislative body has not been effective as expected.

“As the constitution has already guaranteed 33 percent female representation, the role of female MPs is crucial in setting new standards and changing the mindset,” she added.

Addressing the same event, the former chairperson of Constituent Assembly Subhas Chandra Nemwang suggested the female members that they should abide by constitution and laws.

“You are required to utilize various sessions including zero-hour and special session considering the intensity and relevance of the issue. At the same time you should be civilized enough,” said Nemwang.

During the program, the female lawmakers raised their questions on parliamentary system and regulations change.

The event was organized by federal parliament secretariat to train female lawmakers on parliamentary practices.
