KATHMANDU, Dec 21: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has urged the political parties to find solution to the ongoing standoff over the National Assembly election method.

The president urged the parties to forge a common understanding on the election method during a meeting with left alliance leaders KP Oli, Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Subas Nembang at her office, Sheetal Niwas, on Wednesday.

Left alliance leaders at the meeting had expressed their discontent over the single transferable voting system proposed by the government in the National Assembly election ordinance, according to the sources. In response, President Bhandari said that it would be easy for her to authenticate the ordinance if the parties forged a common understanding on the election method.

President Bhandari has been sitting on the election ordinance as the ruling Nepali Congress and opposition CPN-UML are in dispute over the election method to form the upper house. The NC wants single transferable voting system while the left alliance has been demanding majority election system to form the upper house.
