First-time voters excited over polls

DANG, Dec 6: A long queue for voter registration a few months ago and another queue on Tuesday for her voter identity card haven't diminished the excitement of Manakali Pun of Ghorahi at the idea of voting for the first time. 


“I was only a juvenile in the previous election  but I used to go to the nearby poling centers as I was excited to see how people voted. And now I am getting the opportunity to vote also,” she said.

Rudra Batha's face also lit up after receiving her voter identity card at the same locality. She was old enough to vote in past polls but was not interested. So she didn't registered for the voters list. 


Motivated by her friends, she is now eagerly waiting to cast her vote under the new federal structure. “I used to think that elections were nothing, but when I received the ID card I became eager to vote,” said Batha. 


She had refrained from voting in the past election as she used to believe that voting would only help politicians reach higher  but bring nothing to the people. “Leaders have assured us of development and prosperity in this election so I decided to vote,” Batha said. 


Most of the new voters want candidate  to deliver  on development. “I will vote in favor of  development if development is possible due to our votes,” said Bir Bahadur Budha of Ghorahi, who will also be casting his vote for the first time.


Many first time voters have taken the upcoming elections as a new opportunity as these are the first being held under the new federal structure . “It will be a new experience for me, and I am excited,” said Kiran KC. 


Dang district has three constituency and 338,953 eligible voters. They will be voting at 154 poling centers. According to the district election office, 47,781 new voters have been registered since the recent local polls. Many new voters are eagerly waiting to choose their representatives.
