SINDHUPALCHOWK, August 29: The Helambu Highway has been obstructed again due to continuous rainfall and landslides. Police informed Republica that the road has been blocked by a landslide which occurred at Fatakshila Ratopaharo of Melamchi-Zero Kilo, Melamchi Municipality-13.
Tikaram Rai, inspector at the Area Police Office, Melamchi, urged the people to use alternative roads as there is an increased risk of landslides and it has not been possible to maintain the road due to continuous rain as well. Since August, landslides as well as rivers have blocked the road.

Additionally, many houses at Rampur Pairabari, Melamchi-10 are at risk due to the possibility of landslides. Prashant Karki, a local, said that stones have been falling down the cliffs since the construction of the Jyamirey road last year. “Huge stones are falling this year too,” he said.
Karki also informed Republica that of the five houses below the road, three are earthquake relief houses. The locals have complained that they could not sleep due to the fear of falling rocks. “People have started to leave their homes. But the authorities concerned have not shown any heed to the plights of these people,” Karki lamented.
