KATHMANDU, April 9: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a specialized agency under the United Nations, on Friday said that the prices of food items rose to the record high globally following the war that broke out between Russia and Ukraine.
According to the FAO, the prices of mainly food grains, vegetables and fossil fuel rose to maximum following Russia’s invasion over Ukraine on February 24. The soaring prices of petroleum products in particular has taken a toll on prices of overall food items.

The UN organization also expressed its concern that mostly the low income people are hit hard by the impact of rising food prices in most of the countries. FAO has stated that the Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a "basket of commonly-traded food commodities," averaged 159.3 points in March.
The price hike in March was up 12.6 percent from February, which already saw the highest level since the organization began tracking in 1990. It's also 33.6 percent higher than it was last March, according to the FAO.
