KATHMANDU, Sept 7: Former President of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Jay Kumar Nath Shah, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 90.
The longest serving president of CAN who also had served as the vice-president of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) passed away while undergoing treatment for brain hemorrhage at the Norvic Hospital, in Kathmandu on Wednesday morning, his son Amar Kumar Nath Shah informed. He was admitted at the hospital last week after getting injured by felling at home, his son added.

National cricket team head coach Jagat Tamata said that Shah’s death is great loss for Nepali cricket. “He was a great leader of CAN in his time. During my playing time, he used to come to the ground even in practice matches to motivate the players,” said Tamata. Remembering his last meeting with Shah, he said “Last time we met during the special general assembly of CAN couple of weeks ago.
During the conversation, I had said him that he would hit century by crossing his age of 100. But sadly he is no more,” added Tamata. And skipper of the national cricket team Paras Khadka said that Nepali cricket lost the pioneer figure of cricket community. “It’s a great loss for the whole cricketing community. He will be missed a lot as a person that Nepali cricket will always need,” said Khadka.
Shah had served at CAN from 1964 AD to 2006 AD and was felicitated with a Lifetime Achievement award from the International Cricket Council (ICC) under the Best Cricket Promotional Program in 2003. Apart from that Shah was also awarded an honorary lifetime membership by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), one of the oldest English cricket clubs, in 2008.
