DANG, July 3: After a winless streak for 20 long years, CPN-UML has finally registered victory in Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City, an important constituency of Dang district during the recently held local polls.

UML won both the posts of mayor and deputy mayor of the sub-metropolis by wide margins in the second phase of local elections. UML candidate Neru Lal Chaudhary won the mayoral post by securing 22,030 votes while Bhu Bahadur Dangi, his closest rival of Nepali Congress (NC), received 17,484 votes. On the other hand, CPN (Maoist Center)'s mayoral candidate stood third with 12,082 votes, followed by Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) with 1,136 votes.

Likewise, UML's Sita Neupane won the position of deputy mayor garnering 20,792 votes, while her competitor NC's Pushpa Shrestha received 17,603 votes, followed by Maoist Center's Sita Chaudhary with 12,824 votes. RPP candidate for the position Pyauli KC received 7,032 votes. A total of 58,531 voters cast their voted in Ghorahi Sub-metropolis.

Prior to this victory, UML had been continuously losing in Ghorahi since the elections of 1997. This time around, UML had started election campaigns long before the polls. “We were determined to win in this important constituency. That is why we started the campaign since February. We were able to achieve this only through strong management within the party,” said victorious Chaudhary.

“Fed up with the stagnant system, locals this time around sought some changes. They saw the works done by UML and chose UML with hopes of change. This is clear from the election result,” said Chaudhary, who had previously faced defeats in many elections. “The defeats I faced in the past elections encouraged me to become involved with locals. As a result, I got elected.”

UML's Neupane, who won the post of deputy mayor, had actually started her political journey from Bardiya district. She honed her political skills in Dang and then eventually won the deputy mayoral position in Ghorahi in the recent elections.
