Boots are a staple for fall and winter. They are comfortable and warm and, if worn properly, can take your outfit from a flat zero to an impressive ten. However, because boots come in a large variety of styles, it can get a little confusing to know how to style them and understand which kind of boots go with what kind of attire. Here is a short guide on how you can style different kinds of boots to give an extra oomph to your basic winter outfit.
Printed boots
Boots in general are supposed to make you look either more sophisticated or more edgy. If you want to deter from this norm then pick a pair of printed boots. They are fun and chic at the same time and give your overall outfit a very playful dynamic. But they are not very versatile and can make you look gaudy and garish if it is not matched properly with other aspects of your outfit. Keep the other aspects of your look simple if you are wearing a printed boot and let the boot decide the color scheme for the outfit. For example, if you are wearing a navy blue boot with coral and green flower patterns, your top (blouse) should either be coral, navy blue or green. Also hold back on over accessorizing while wearing a pair of printed boot.
Winter wonders
Sock boots
If you have not jumped on the sock booties bandwagon then it’s about time you did. It’s both comfortable and versatile and looks stylish, trendy and quirky all at the same time. If you don’t know what sock boots are, they are these lean, skin tight stretchy jersey boots that come under the athleisure trend tide and have quickly become Instagram’s “it” boots after their relaunch into the fashion scene early this year. They are almost always heeled and colorful. These are another pair that look very extravagant and should be the highlight of your outfit. Wear a relatively simpler outfit when you wear these boots and make sure to play up the color of the boots. If your boots are in bright colors, wear clothes that are in muted and neutral colors and vice versa. Also make sure your socks don’t peek out from underneath as it makes the whole outfit look badly put together.
Ankle boots
Ankle boots are a must have for fall. They are very versatile and work for a variety of different styles. For a sleek and put together look, wear them with a pair of skinny jeans or tights and leggings. Wearing a tighter bottom makes your legs look longer and leaner and ensures that your outfit does not look frumpy. Cuffing your jeans just above your ankle will give you an effortlessly cool vibe. For everyday use, pick a flat pair that is easy to walk in. If you want something that you can wear to parties but also don’t want it to go out of fashion, pick a pair of plain black boots with a small heel. A silver boot or black boot with a synthetic shine are also good picks that work for parties and, since they are timeless pieces, they will not go out of fashion for a long time.
Knee and thigh high boots
At first glance, knee-high or thigh-high look very intimidating and something that not a lot of people can pull off. But they are actually more wearable and congenial than you think. You can wear them over everything from skinny jeans and tight trousers to mini dress and midi skirt. For the classic fall approach, wear them with dark skinny jeans and an oversized turtleneck. For a sexier approach, wear an over the knee (thigh-high) boots with a little black dress and a long cardigan or a duster coat. You can also style them with culottes in neutral shades or long dress and skirts for a bohemian styled outfit. Let these boots be the highlight of your outfit and never try to cover them up.
Combat boots
Combat boots are staple pieces for your wardrobe. They are very versatile and can be worn with a lot of different outfits and in a lot of different situations. For an edgy look, pair your combat boots with a leather (or faux leather) jacket. For a more laid back approach, pair the combat boots with cropped pants or flared (and cropped) pants – you just have to make sure your bottoms don’t cover your boots. Combats boots can also be incorporated into an outfit with a feminine style. You could wear them with long and flowy dresses and skirts or even with skinny jeans and nice blouse for that effect. One other thing that you need to actively avoid is opting to wear loose fitting long bottoms (just applicable to trousers and pants, not to skirts and dresses) with your combat boots.
