KATHMANDU, Oct 9: Meat sellers have fixed the price of goat meat at Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,300 per kg in the Kathmandu Valley for the mean time of Dashain starting Tuesday.
According to National Meat Entrepreneurs Association (NMEA), the goat meat including stomach and intestine has been fixed at Rs 1,000 per kg. Likewise, the price for meat mixed with fats has been fixed at Rs 1,200 per kg while it will cost Rs 1,300 a kg for the meat without adding any sub-components. The price rate will be effective from Fulpati, the seventh day of Dashain that falls on Tuesday.
Gold price drops by Rs 2,700 per tola
Ramesh Khadgi, president of NMEA, said they have directed all the meat sellers to maintain the price list as per the rate fixed by the umbrella organization. “We will take action against those who will be found selling at higher rates than the ones fixed by the association,” Khadgi said.
The records with the Department of Livestock Services also show that the current supply of live goats is more than the demand for this year's festival. The department has estimated that around one million live goats will be sold throughout the country during Dashain.
Similarly, the price of chicken has been fixed at Rs 300 per kg while the price of buffalo meat and pork each will cost Rs 500 per kg. Compared to others in the type, goat meat is in high demand during the biggest festival of Hindus.
Meanwhile, the price of Himalayan goat, owing to the low supply this year, has been doubled compared to the price of the last year. According to the NMEA, the live Himalayan goat is being sold at Rs 1,500 per kg, compared to the price of Rs 800 per kg of the last year’s festival.
