Govt allocates Rs 134 billion for education

KATHMANDU, May 30: The government has allocated Rs 134 billion for the education sector, including science and technology. 


Finance Minister Yuba Raj Khatiwada announced to provide additional Rs 840 million for operation of technical classes in community schools. The government has also increased the grant for the University Grant Commission (UGC).

The UGC will get Rs 14.36 billion for improving the quality of education of government colleges. In the science and technology sector, the government has decided to establish Madan Bhandari Science and Technology Academy to promote science and technology in the country. 


Meanwhile, the government has allocated Rs 56.41 billion for the health sector in its annual budget. The government, which had promised to increase coverage of health insurance, has decided to release Rs 4 billion as grant to the local bodies as part of the government’s plan to build at least one health facility in all wards. The government plans to build 1,200 health posts in the first phase.  The government has also announced to establish health academy in each of the seven provinces and establish additional health offices on need basis.
