KATHMANDU, April 17: The government has started the process of installing global positioning system (GPS) devices in means of public transport, targeting to conduct effective monitoring of the public service vehicles.

According to the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), it commenced pilot projects in three vehicles of Mayur Yatayat from March-end. Based on the information of the piloting, the necessary software for the coding of GPS is being developed, said DoTM officials.

Based on the success of the piloting, the government has targeted to expand it to all vehicles being used in public transportation. According to the DoTM, the main server of the to-be-installed GPS data will be maintained at the Nepal Government Data Center, the government’s portal that maintains high-grade data at the national level.

The GPS system is expected to track the whereabouts of the means of public transport that includes the supervision of en-route locations, drivers and the speed of the vehicles. It is also said to minimize the chance of accidents caused by the drivers’ mistakes and over-speeding.

The officials said the DoTM has also planned to develop related mobile apps for the tracking system. Provided the apps come online, even an individual can track the position of the means of public transport, said the department.
