KATHMANDU, July 11: The government has expedited consultation with the main opposition party to endorse the citizenship bill through parliament.
Home Minister Balkrishna Khand and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Gobinda Prasad Sharma, have held discussion with deputy parliamentary party leader of the main opposition party, CPN-UML, Subash Chandra Nembang, on the bill designed to amend Nepali Citizenship Act, 2063 BS.
Home Minister Khand said that the discussion held at the residence of Nembang in Baluwatar dwelt on the bill relating to citizenship. He further said that the government urged the main opposition party to extend necessary cooperation to endorse the bill.

In response, leader Nembang reportedly said that the UML is positive to the bill relating to amendment to the Citizenship Act, but it is yet to see the points included in the bill.
The bill designed to amend the Nepali Citizenship Act, 2063 BS was registered in the House of Representatives on August 7, 2018. Again on June 23, 2020, the State Affairs Committee had presented the bill in the parliament along with its report.
The bill is expected to address the problem of citizenship certificates seen in the country.
