KATHMANDU, Nov 21: CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has requested the government to be serious about the issues regarding the hike of fuel prices.

Receiving a memorandum from the student unions demanding the withdrawal of Nepal Oil Corporation’s (NOC) decision to hike fuel prices on Sunday, leader Nepal said that the government has to be serious on the rising issues raised by the public.

Stating that the ministries of industry, commerce and supplies are vacant at the moment, Nepal said that the CPN (Unified Socialist) will provide the minister to fill the posts. “Although there could be a political reason behind the price hike of fuel prices, the taxes cannot be increased by adding woes to the public,” Nepal said.

Nepal stressed that a hike of Rs 125 per LPG within a span of 12 days is totally unacceptable. He said that it is a shock for the fuel prices to skyrocket even though the petroleum supply pipe has already been installed in Raxaul. He said that the losses should be registered and an account should be kept as there are cases of smuggling of fuel as well. Nepal also said that the government should not add woes to the public by hiking the fuel prices but instead decrease the taxes on fuel consumption.

Furthermore, the student unions affiliated with various political parties have been demanding the NOC withdraw its decision to hike the fuel prices. They have warned to stage protests if the government doesn't act on the issue soon.
