KATHMANDU, May 30: The government is going to postpone the poll date for the second round of local elections yet again.

In a meeting with the chief commissioner and commissioners of the Election Commission, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has proposed holding the elections on June 28. The new date was proposed considering Ramdan, one of the important festivals of the Muslim community.

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is seen as the next prime minister as per the power sharing deal between NC and the CPN (Maoist Center), Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi and other senior ruling leaders were also present in the meeting. In the meeting, the PM sought EC's suggestion regarding the new poll date.

The election body is said to be positive about the PM's proposal. "He has proposed June 28 as the fresh poll date. We have taken it positively as many Muslims will be deprived from voting if the poll date is not changed," said Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav.

A Cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday is likely to announce the fresh poll date. The government on Tuesday had rescheduled the second phase of elections for June 23 from June 14.
