KATHMANDU, July 26: From August 17, the government is going to tighten the   production, import, sale, distribution and use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns.


The Department of Environment under the Ministry of Forest and Environment has issued a notice and said that from August 17, the production, import, sale, distribution and use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns will be strictly monitored.

According to the department, action will be taken in accordance with the Environment Protection Act, 2019 and the Environment Protection Regulations, 2020 if it is found that plastic bags thinner than 40 microns are used, manufactured and sold contrary to the government's decision.


The department said, “In order to effectively implement the decision of the Government of Nepal to ban plastic bags, which have such a sensitive effect on the environment, the action plan related to the ban of plastic bags, 2020 has been approved and implemented by the decision of the Government of Nepal (Council of Ministers) on the date of 31 January 2022. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the monitoring has been weak for some time, but in recent days, there has been an increase in the production and use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns.”
