NCP leaders Parshu Meghi Gurung, Ram Narayan Bidari and Dilkumari Rawal (Parbati) are set to get elected to the posts of chiefs of the committees unopposed on Wednesday as no other upper house member filed nominations for the posts. “Only one person filed their nominations for each of the three committees on Tuesday. The election of the remaining one committee has been postponed after no-one filed their candidacy for its head in the given time,” said Rajendra Phyual, secretary at the National Assembly. According to him the committees concerned will announce the election of their heads in the committee meetings slated for Wednesday.

Gurung has become unopposed for head of the Legislation Management Committee, Bidari for the Delegated Management and Government Assurance Committee and Rawal for the National Concerns and Coordination Committee. Al three leaders are from the NCP.

According to NCP parliamentary party leader of the upper house, Dinanath Sharma, the party didn't file candidacy for one committee following consensus with the NC to allot one panel head to the main opposition. NC decided to contest Tara Devi Bhatta to the post of head of Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee, but didn't file her candidacy on Tuesday as she is a member of another upper house committee. Any aspirants for the committee heads must be a member of the same parliamentary committee as per the parliamentary regulations.

NC leaders informed that Bhatta'a membership will be transferred to the sustainable development committee from the national concerns committee from the next upper house meeting. The election to pick the head of the sustainable development committee is likely to be held next Tuesday.

Earlier, NCP had decided to contest Bhairab Sundar Shrestha for the post of head of the sustainable development committee but asked him not to register his candidacy following the consensus with NC. The opposition had been insisting that it should get the post of head of at least one of the four upper house committees.
