Health Ministry suggests imposing new curbs as COVID-19 cases see a fresh spike in Nepal

KATHMANDU, April 7: Keeping in view of the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, the government has urged restaurants and other businesses to close their operation after 9 pm.


Ministry of Health and Population in a public notice on Wednesday made the appeal saying that the risk of further spread of COVID-19 was growing in view of the increasing instances of the violation of COVID-19 health protocols and the growing number of the UK variant of the COVID-19 being traced in Nepal.


Deputy Spokesperson at the Ministry of Health Dr Samir Kumar Adhikari has asked all District Administration Offices (DAOs) across the country to make it mandatory for people traveling outside their home to wear face masks and penalize those violating this health safety protocol as per the Infectious Diseases Control Act.

The MoHP has also asked all concerned local governments and health offices to expand the scope of contact tracing to identify persons infected with COVID-19 and increase the number of PCR and antigen tests as deemed necessary to facilitate case investigation. The ministry also urged local authorities concerned to restrict people’s movement if more than 500 cases are detected in big cities and more than 100 cases in small cities.


The Health Ministry has also urged to effectively implement the quarantine rules and the number of the members of foreign delegations visiting Nepal. Stating that the number of COVID-19 cases among students going to schools has increased at an alarming rate in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, the ministry has asked all academic institutions to exercise a high level of precautions to avoid further spread of COVID-19 cases.


Among other things, the ministry has urged all to exercise extreme health precautions in places such as shopping malls, cinema halls, health clubs, swimming pools, party palaces, and temples as these places often see huge crowds.
