The government commuted Chaudhary's life sentence on the occasion of Republic Day, paving the way for him to walk free from Dillibazar Jail on Monday.
A writ petition was filed in the SC on Tuesday against the government's decision to commute Chaudhary's sentence. The victims of the Tikapur incident, Sharda Kathayat Bohora and others, filed the writ petition at the apex court against the decision to pardon Chaudhary's sentence.
Justice Anand Mohan Bhattarai to hear writ petition filed again...
Kathayat is the wife of police inspector Keshav Bohora, who was killed in the Tikapur incident. Chaudhary, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the District, High and Supreme Courts, was incarcerated in Dillibazar Jail.
If the government had not commuted the sentence, according to the court's verdict, Chaudhary would have remained in jail until Falgun 13, 2094 BS. However, the government has decided to waive the rest of Chaudhary's sentence in "political bargaining".
Chaudhary has been convicted in the Tikapur carnage. He was the mastermind of the Tikapur (Kailali) carnage that occured on August 17, 2015. The agitating Tharu activists had brutally killed eight people including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lakshman Neupane, who was the head of the then Seti Zonal Police Office at the time, five members of the Nepal Police, two members of the Armed Police Force and one infant in the ensuing clash.
