KATHMANDU, Jan 8: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane has requested the people involved in protests at Maitighar, Kathmandu to stop their activism and cooperate with the investigation to deliver justice to Nirmala Kurmi of Banke.

Nirmala Kurmi, a widow with two sons, had massive property in her family’s name. The family owned 125 kathas of land, which is believed to be the reason behind the deaths of her two sons and her forceful disappearance a decade ago.

Kurmi lost her two sons in an interval of 11 days. She became suspicious of foul play and suspected the role of land mafia after the death of her second son. Following the death of her sons, she filed a complaint at the Muslim Community Development and Awareness Center, Banke on February 1, 2010, accusing Nepali Congress leader Badshah Kurmi, a former lawmaker, of confiscating her land registration documents.

After accusing the NC leader, Nirmala Kurmi suddenly disappeared while the authorities received her death certificate from India.

According to a police constable at the District Police Office, Banke, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, they received a death certificate submitted as Nirmala's is in the name of Nirmala Devi born in 1985, although Nirmala's citizenship was issued in 1989.

"Her birth date listed on the death certificate doesn't add up, even if she obtained her citizenship when she was 18 years old. The documents are inconsistent,” said the police constable.

Home Minister Lamichhane said that the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police is investigating the case by deploying a special team.

After assuming the role of the home minister, Lamichhane called Ruby Khan, who was on a sit-in twice, and said that the government was serious about the incident and asked her to stop the protest and help the police to find the culprits.

On Monday, Home Minister Lamichhane held discussion with Home Secretary Binod Prakash Singh, Inspector General of Police Dhiraj Pratap Singh and other high-ranking  security officials and instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) to find the truth behind the case and submit a report.
