HoR passes first Citizenship Amendment Bill

KATHMANDU, July 13: The House of Representatives (HoR) has passed the country’s first Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2022. In the meeting of the HoR held on Wednesday, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand presented Nepal’s first Citizenship Amendment Bill 2022 before the lawmakers.

KATHMANDU, July 13: The House of Representatives (HoR) has passed the country’s first Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2022. In the meeting of the HoR held on Wednesday, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand presented Nepal’s first Citizenship Amendment Bill 2022 before the lawmakers.


Home Minister Khand mentioned that Article 10 of the constitution guarantees that no Nepali citizen will be deprived of the right to acquire citizenship. He said that the bill has been tabled in parliament to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act 2006 to make provisions for providing citizenship as directed by the constitution.

The home minister said, “Apart from the provisions stipulated in Articles 10 to 15 in Part 2 of the Constitution of Nepal, it is mentioned that other matters relating to citizenship are dealt with as per federal law. Article 10 of the constitution guarantees that no Nepali citizen will be deprived of the right to acquire citizenship. I submit to this esteemed House of Representatives a bill to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act 2006 to make arrangements for issues related to citizenship as directed by the constitution.”


After the notice of protest by the lawmakers of the main opposition party CPN-UML was rejected, Home Minister Khand presented the amendment bill on citizenship in the upper house.
