After wheat, India bans export of sugar

KATHMANDU, May 25: India has imposed a ban on sugar exports with effect from June 1. Earlier, India also banned wheat exports.

KATHMANDU, May 25: India has imposed a ban on sugar exports with effect from June 1. Earlier, India also banned wheat exports.


It is said that sugar export up to 10 million metric tons will not be stopped during the sugar production season. From October 2021 to September 2022, this amount can be exported from India.

At present, about 250,000 metric tons of sugar is being consumed annually in Nepal for industrial and consumption purposes. Out of this, about 130,000 metric tons of sugar is being sourced domestically. The rest is imported from different countries. India's ban on sugar exports is likely to have some effect on Nepal.


India alone has exported 89,000 metric tons of sugar worth Rs 4.70 billion to Nepal in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year.
